Dear Parents/Guardians,
As we are fast approaching our March break and hopefully the end of this record breaking winter, I wanted to give you a heads up for our week ahead.
Wednesday is our Book Exchange, therefore please ensure that your children return their books, so that they can take some books out for the break.
Also, please continue to read with your child each night and have them continue to go on RazKids and IXL.
After the March Break we will be focusing on paragraph and narrative writing. I will send home some Ontario writing exemplars from the ministry so that you can see what the expectation is for your child's writing and how it is assessed based on the four levels of academic achievement.
In addition to reading and practicing math at home, it is imperative that children have the opportunity to write. You may want to have your child write in a diary/journal or do some creative writing just to practice getting their thoughts on paper. In the early stages of writing, the focus is on getting the ideas down and on the conventions of writing. There isn't much focus on spelling (other than the common sight words). Have your child write about their March break in sequential order, using words such as first, then, next, after, finally/last.
This week:
Dance-a-thon is this upcoming Friday and it is 80's themed. I'm really looking forward to the scrunchies, neon colours, leggings, pink lipstick and blue eye shadow, as I grew up in the 80's. I can't wait to reminisce through old hits/classics. The kids have already been exposed to several songs and are surprisingly taking a huge liking to them.
Family Tree: As part of our social studies unit, there was a homework package that went out several weeks ago regarding the family tree. There was some confusion around this as some students received it earlier, while others received it the following week (this is due to me having a supply teacher for a workshop that I attended - half the folders that were returned on Monday were not sent home with the homework because the supply teacher did not put it in the folders). In any event, there are still some homework packages that have not been sent back. If you could, please ensure that they are completed by this week, so we can continue to have kids present them, as well as to complete their family tree art activity.
We will be using the photographs that your child brought to school to make a family tree painting on Wednesday.
GR.2 Science: On Monday I will send home a review sheet for the kids to study and practice, as they will be having a mini quiz on Air and Water on Friday. Everything that they need to know will be on the sheet. It's not going to be a formal test/quiz, but more so a piece of assessment that is independent. The questions will be True or False, some matching words, and one short answer question on the water cycle. This unit has been covered in depth and from our review this passed Friday, it seems that most of the students already know all of the information.
Tuesday: Ms. Ritsakis and I have a professional development day/workshop and we will not be in school.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
I hope you have a great week!!!
